DR. LOUISE MORRIS

Louise is a theatre maker and site-specific installation artist whose current practice responds to local stories, place making and belonging for communities and audiences. Her practice is concerned with creative actions and interventions in situ that reveal the stories of a given place and can begin to foster deeper connections between artists of all disciplines and the communities in which they live and work. Lecturer in Art and Performance (2008-2019) Deakin University, Company Member of Splinters Theatre of Spectacle (1992-1999) and Red Cabbage Collective (2001-2010). 

The recipient of two Australian Postgraduate Awards, she completed a Masters in Animateuring- Cross Modal Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2008 and was awarded her doctorate from Deakin University in 2018 where she is now an honorary fellow. 

In 2019, she moved to Tanja and established Navigate Arts, an independent creative enterprise at the Old Tanja Church, studios and surrounds as a hub for artists, run by artists. Navigate Arts core vision is to provide a place to open up new communities of professional practice and collaboration for local emerging and professional artists. Since moving to the Bega Shire, Morris has been the project manager for the Bermagui Create and Make Crew (a BVSC initiative) who delivered two major site-specific community events Bega Parklight (under the direction of Morris) and SynthSurfers. Navigate Arts has also supported a variety of interdisciplinary projects and artists to develop new work at the Tanja Church venue including COPE and Lee Pemberton- Bedrock Creators. Louise has more recently been engaged with RealArtWorks (an inclusive ‘post-disability’ company based in Lismore). Louise has worked on three major site-specific projects with this company, The Trail of Light and Sound for the Bermagui Sculpture Festival in March, the unUsual Festival in Lismore in November 2019 and her installation work was featured at their event for ArtState Wagga Wagga in 2020.

Gary Lonesborough

Gary Lonesborough is a Yuin man, who grew up on the Far South Coast of NSW as part of a large and proud Aboriginal family. Growing up a massive Kylie Minogue and North Queensland Cowboys fan, Gary was always writing as a child, and continued his creative journey when he moved to Sydney to study at film school. Gary has experience working in Aboriginal health, the disability sector (including experience working in the Youth Justice System), and the film industry. He was Bega Valley Shire Council Young Citizen of the Year, won the Patrick White Young Indigenous Writers' Award, and has received a Copyright Agency First Nations Fellowship. The Boy from the Mish is Gary's debut YA novel.
