HEATHER BURNESS

image-asset.jpeg

Heather Burness is a visual artist who works in print-based mediums and works on paper. She uses unconventional print processes using steel plates that have been corroded in the flow of water or soil. Heather also draws and takes photos.

She both studied and taught at the ANU School of Art and was a workshop teacher at Studio One and Megalo Print Studio and Gallery over many years. She taught many talented people for 15 years in Canberra in the dark arts of etching, some of whom have gone on to brilliant careers. Apart from making her own work and being with her family and dog, teaching and mentoring is one if her favourite things to do.

Heather relocated to the beautiful Bega Valley 6 years ago, building a studio she named Grey Lady Press. In pre-Covid times she was leading printmaking workshops at Grey Lady which she hopes will restart in the future. In the meantime, she is planning some ventures into online teaching and mentoring. During this challenging year she has been making lots of drawings and prints and has an exhibition coming up at Altenburg Gallery in Braidwood during December and January.

Heather is also a Master Printer, or, as she prefers, ‘a mistress printer’, which means that she collaborates with other artists, to create their prints and also prints their editions. Notable clients she has worked with have been the award-winning Sydney based painter Jude Rae, and the significant Yolngu artist, Naminapu Maymuru White.

Heather has been a finalist in numerous awards and undergone a number of residencies. She was awarded the prestigious Capital Arts Patrons Organisation Fellowship Award in 2012 which funded a trip to Yirrkala in North East Arnhem for her to complete some work.

Heather has works in the collections of the State Library of NSW, The National Gallery of Australia, the National Library of Australia, Canberra Museum and Gallery and several regional galleries.

BEST LAID PLANS WEBINAR

Social-Tile-Best-Laid-Plans-Final.png

BEST LAID PLANS is a webinar discussing the presentation of live creative events in a post-Covid world.

What should organisations and businesses be addressing in order to go ‘back to normal’ and host live events; or should we be preparing for the ‘new normal’, whatever that might be?

Experts from a range of creative business present their thoughts, including:

  • Lindy Hume, Artistic Director and Vernon Guest Executive Producer of Tasmania’s Ten Days on the Island, discussing their approach to the ‘new normal’;

  • Suzanne Derry, from the Arts Law Centre of Australia, discussing the legal aspects of live events;

  • Monica Davidson, creative business expert, focussing on issues of risk analysis and cost benefit;

  • Zena Armstong, Director of the Cobargo Folk Festival, discussing the proposed approach for regional festival circuits.

This event was facilitated by Andrew Gray, business advisor and Executive Director of South East Arts.

Ideal for: Arts organisations and businesses hosting creative live events and festivals, and anyone curious about the ‘new normal’.
